Oppose the record label-led performance tax on radio

"There would be no more local radio"

19 February 2010

Program director “Sweet Lenny” of WZOK in Rockford, Illinois has joined the growing chorus of broadcasters speaking out against the performance tax.  The Rockford CBS affiliate, WIFR, reports:

Lenny, along with many other broadcasters nationwide, is fighting a proposed "Performance Tax." It's where radio stations would be required to pay royalties to record labels and individual artists. That’s on top of thousands already spent each year on copyright fees.

“It would change everything, I mean, no more new music, lost jobs, there would be no more local radio" said Lenny.

Well said, Sweet Lenny.

And speaking of fees to the record companies, the “thousands already spent each year” actually translates to  hundreds of millions of dollars paid by radio stations to songwriters and music publishers annually.
